Should I Buy a Shaved Ice Franchise or Start My Own Independent Brand?
This is a common question for many small businesses, not just in the shaved ice and snow cone arena.
A quick search online will produce several different franchise options. But before choosing a particular franchise, consider if a franchise is the best option.
Pros of a Franchise
Here are some reasons why buying into a franchise could be helpful.
A good franchise will offer a clear blueprint. You only need to follow directions and execute them well.
A franchise should offer a successful and proven business model. You will probably have a trustworthy supply chain.
If it’s a well known brand, you have an immediate name recognition from day one. You may also get an established marketing plan.
You might have an easier time getting a loan if you want to buy a franchise.
Here are a two well-known franchises (we don’t endorse them, this is just for your information):
Cons of a Franchise
It will cost more. Since someone else did a lot of work to create everything, it only makes sense. However, if you have limited funds, becoming independent could save you a bunch.
In addition to the startup franchise fee, there are ongoing costs. You will typically pay a portion of each month’s profits to the home office.
In addition to the monthly franchising cut, you will may have to purchase all your supplies through the home office. Those supplies will probably not be cheap.
Did we mention buying a franchise will cost more?
Limited flexibility. You may be required to sell certain items. The franchise might prohibit you from selling additional items. You are generally locked into their business model and are not free to experiment on your own.
As we mentioned in choosing flavors, you’ll want to taste different brands to see what you prefer. With a franchise, you won’t be able to choose what you want.
Do Research on the Franchise
For all the pros and cons we listed, a lot depends on the particular franchise. For sure, some franchises are better than others.
You should ask around to get honest feedback from others who have actually been in the franchise you are considering. Don’t limit yourself to forums and facebook groups, seek out actual owners in person if possible.
We have talked with numerous business owners of all kinds, over the years, not just shaved ice and snow cone sellers. In general, we have heard many more negative things about franchises than positive. Your experience may be different, so do your own research.
It’s Not Rocket Science
Keep in mind that shaved ice and snow cones are not that complicated. MANY people have started a shaved ice business without franchising.
In contrast, for example, a restaurant can be much more challenging, so the benefits of franchising might be greater in that case.
But if you think you can operate a shaved ice business, you probably can. If you like the flexibility of choosing your own brand of syrup, you can.
If you really want to be your own boss and do things your way, you should. Starting your own independent business is for you!
