Types of Ice Shavers

If you are selling shaved ice, then you need a shaved ice machine. If you are selling snow cones, then a snow cone machine is what you want.

Shaved Ice vs Snow Cones

As we talked about in snow cones vs shaved ice, they are really two different products, even though they’re very similar.

Many people won’t know the difference, or even care. But you should. And some of your customers will definitely care.

Snow cones are popular for mobile units that focus on events. Quantity and speed is the name of the game. Quality is not the most important thing, and you probably aren’t as concerned about repeat business.

Shaved ice is a whole different story. Those who appreciate soft and fluffy shaved ice will not settle for anything less.

Snow Cone Machines

There are many different snow cone machines on the market. Here at Ragg’s Supply, most of our experience is with shaved ice, so we don’t have specific recommendations for snow cone machines.

Shaved Ice Machines

Two Types of Shaved Ice Machines

There are two main types of shaved ice machines: block ice shavers and cube ice shavers. Let’s breakdown the differences between them.

The obvious difference is the type of ice each one uses. Block ice shavers require block ice, while cube shavers use ice cubes. No surprise.

The first thing you need to know is whether or not you can obtain block ice. If you have a local supplier, then you’re all set. If not, you can consider making your own.

If you’re in the greater Dallas & Fort Worth area, Ragg’s Supply is one of the only suppliers of genuine block ice.

You can consider making your own, but that has its own set of challenges. Aside from needing the equipment, there may be health department restrictions on making your own ice. Check with your local agencies.

Block Ice Shavers vs. Cube Ice Shavers

The absolute best shaved ice comes from block ice. It is soft and fluffy like fresh snow. We always recommend this option. If you haven’t tried it, find a shaved ice stand nearby and taste for yourself.

The biggest advantage of a cube ice shaver is that you can get ice cubes anywhere, so you never have to worry about supply.

Cube shavers are also easier to use, especially if you have many employees. Block shavers are pretty easy to use, but they require a little training and practice.

Both types can shave ice very quickly.

Cube shavers are slightly less expensive, but block shavers are typically industrial strength and will probably last longer.

Bottom line: For ease and convenience, cube shavers win. For the softest ice, block shavers are the best.

Two Types of Block Ice Shavers

But there’s more to it. Amongst block shavers, there are two main types: the classic New Orleans style and the Japanese (or Hawaiian) style.

The New Orleans style are the bigger and bulkier. They are more horizontal and use rectangular blocks of ice, usually 10 or 12 pounds.

The ice sits in the horizontal cabinet and is pushed into the blades with a lever. The motor turns the blades, which are on the right. This is also where the ice chute is.

The New Orleans style shavers are very popular here in the south. Here at Ragg’s Supply, the Southern Snow shaved ice machine is our favorite, and that’s what we carry.

Japanese style shavers are popular in Hawaii. You guessed it, that’s why they’re called Hawaiian style. These are more upright, and use round blocks of ice up to 7 pounds.

The motor spins the ice on these shavers. The ice is on top of the stationary blades, and the shaved ice drops underneath the blades.
